Becoming Independent

With the way the economy is today, I’m really considering becoming an Independent Contractor. Most people know us as work at home moms, entrepreneurs, and small business owners.

I hope that I’m ready for this because there is a lot of research and work ahead. Independent Contractors have to establish their own contract, produce flyers, produce business cards, set up advertising, speak with an income tax advisor and basicly hit the ground running.

The Pros:

  • Establish your own schedule
  • Set your own fee
  • Work from home
  • Business Tax Right Offs

The Cons:

  • No hourly paycheck
  • No medical and disability benefits
  • Business costs
  • Some companies may not bee keen to the idea

I’ve thought about taking assignments on The On Demand Global Workforce – oDesk. This is a company that connects businesses with a workforce around the world. There are some positives and negatives about the site.

I like the fact that you can list every experience that a person has had in their life. Though the trend seems to be that people have to take assignments at low wages just to obtain feedback. I don’t mind doing that for a couple of assignments but not forever.

As usual most assignments seem to be in web development, software development, Networking, and Information Systems.

I knew I should have finished my degree in Computer Science. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20 and at the time I had to deal with family issues that kept me from school.

Long day ending in pain

Sorry about getting this to everyone late. Mike and I had a long eight hours yesterday. All I wanted to do was get home, eat our dinner, watch a little T.V. and then crash.

It was a productive day because I was able to get almost three miles of walking in. Though by the end of our eight hours of errands my feet were on fire. I don’t know if my shoes are causing a heat rash on my foot or if it’s just rubbing on the feet. I’ve sent some emails to some fellow walkers and one to my uncle to find out how to prevent it. My uncle has been a runner for years and I’m sure that he’s dealt with this before.

Some of my friends on Sparkpeople suggested putting Vasaline or bee wax salve on my feet and then using cotton walking socks. I’m going to try that tonight when I head out for another walk.

I still have a lot of excitement inside of me today. I’m excited about the possibility of walking for the cure in 2009. I hope they are going to have one in Texas next year. I would like to do the 3 day walk and then spend some time with my sister, brother, and nephew in law.

I’m also excited about watching my measurements and the scale hitting lower numbers. I know that it’s not going to happen in a week but maybe I can see at least a 1 pound loss for the week.

Well Mike and I should get back to the job searching. It’s really, really tough out there. Especially with people who have roadblocks like we do. I know that God will help us find a way around it.

Everyone have a great Tuesday and I’ll see you later tonight to talk about my training today.

Day 2 of training

It’s actually a rest day for training. I get one day a week and I’m going to enjoy it. I did get about a half mile walk in today. My husband and I have to take public transportation to work. So the walk is usually a quarter mile to the bus stop and then a quarter mile home from the bus stop.

Though I feel a little silly. We could have just kept walking to the light rail which would have given us a two mile walk for the day. The rest of the day is filled with church, bible study, and fellowship with friends.

I’m really excited about the training for the yearly 3 day walks. I pray that I can raise the money each year to actually do the walk but all I can do is try my best. I’m excited about raising money, I’m excited about possible doing the walk, I’m excited about getting pictures of Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, San Diego, Cleveland, Seattle, The Twin Cities, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Atlanta, Tampa, Dallas, and Arizona.

Well unless they change the cities each year. It’s just the possibility of being able to travel around the U.S. for a good cause.
